Scrap Metal Recycling: What's Worth Sorting and What Isn't

Quick Answer: Sort with a magnet first: if it sticks, the piece is steel or iron and grades lowest. Copper, brass, aluminum, and stainless grade higher and belong in separate piles. Pressurized tanks and refrigerant appliances need a different route entirely.
The pile behind the shed rarely starts as a pile. A water heater comes out during a repair and gets set aside. A section of chain-link comes down and leans against the fence line. An AC condenser gets swapped and the old one stays where the tech left it. Two years on there is a heap of metal in the side yard, and almost none of it is a single material.
Sorting that heap decides what happens to it. A scrap yard grades metal by what it is and how clean it is, so the difference between one mixed mound and five separated piles decides how the load is graded and, in some cases, whether a yard will accept it at all. The sorting itself needs one magnet and about ten minutes.
Start With a Magnet
Every scrap decision begins with one question: does a magnet stick to it?
If it sticks, the metal is ferrous, meaning it is mostly iron. Steel and cast iron are the two you will meet: appliance shells, fence posts, shed frames, old bathtubs, radiators, engine parts. Ferrous metal is heavy and common, which is why it grades lowest per pound of anything in the pile. It is also usually most of the weight you are moving.
A flat refrigerator magnet is all the tool this needs. Test each piece, not each pile: a washing machine is a steel shell wrapped around a copper-wound motor, and the two are graded separately.
If the magnet slides off, the metal is non-ferrous, and that is where most of the value in a household pile sits: copper, aluminum, and brass.
Stainless steel needs its own note, because it belongs in neither pile. It is iron-based, so it is not non-ferrous, but it is graded on its alloy content rather than as plain steel. The 300-series grades used in sinks and appliance faces are effectively non-magnetic. The cheaper 400-series grades used in trim and budget panels are strongly magnetic and will snap to a magnet exactly like carbon steel, so a magnet cannot separate those two on its own. Anything that grabs a magnet but still looks bright, hard, and free of rust is worth setting aside and asking about rather than defaulting into the steel pile.
The Metals Worth Separating
Copper. Reddish-orange when clean, dull brown when aged, and green where it has weathered outdoors. It is the highest-grading metal most households produce. Look for it in plumbing pipe, electrical wiring, motor windings, AC coils, and old extension cords.
Brass. Yellow with a warm red cast, turning dull green outdoors. Brass is copper and zinc, and it is noticeably heavier than it looks. Faucets, shutoff valves, hose bibs, sprinkler fittings, door hardware, and keys are the usual sources.
Aluminum. Light, dull grey, and never magnetic. Window and screen-door frames, gutters, downspouts, soffit and fascia, siding, cans, ladders, and the fins on an AC condenser.
Stainless steel. Bright, hard, and non-magnetic in the common grades because of its nickel content. Sinks, appliance faces, counters, and commercial kitchen equipment.
Steel and cast iron. Magnetic, dense, and the bulk of most piles. Cast iron in particular is deceptive: an old tub or a radiator can weigh several hundred pounds and needs equipment rather than enthusiasm.
Where These Metals Hide
Most items are not one metal, and the value usually sits in the smallest part. Knowing where to look changes what comes off the pile before it goes anywhere.
A water heater is a steel jacket around a glass-lined tank, but the drain valve and the inlet and outlet fittings are frequently brass, and the anode rod is magnesium or aluminum. An AC condenser is usually the richest single item a house produces: a copper-tube and aluminum-fin coil on most older units, all-aluminum microchannel on many newer ones, plus a copper-wound motor and a steel cabinet, all bolted together. Old wiring is copper under a jacket. Window frames and screen doors are aluminum even when painted to look like something else. A claw-foot or drop-in tub from an older house is cast iron under the enamel. Faucets, hose bibs, and sprinkler manifolds are brass under the chrome plating.
Why Clean Scrap Grades Better Than Dirty
In yard language, clean means one metal with nothing else attached. Dirty means everything else.
A length of copper pipe with brass fittings still soldered on gets graded as the lesser of the two. Aluminum with steel screws through it does the same. Insulated wire grades below bare bright copper because the yard has to account for the weight of insulation it cannot sell. Painted aluminum grades below mill-finish aluminum. None of this is arbitrary: the yard is buying feedstock for a furnace, and anything that is not the metal has to come out somewhere.
Whether to strip a piece down is a judgment about time. A short run of thick service cable repays the time it takes with a stripping tool. A bucket of fine strands can take an afternoon and return very little.
Never cut, crush, or torch a sealed appliance or a pressurized tank. Refrigerators and AC units hold refrigerant that has to be recovered first, and a tank that reads empty can still carry enough pressure to burst.
What Will Not Go in a Scrap Load
Some things get turned away at the gate, and it is better to know before loading a trailer.
Pressurized tanks are the firm one: propane cylinders, oxygen and acetylene bottles, compressed air tanks, and fire extinguishers. Yards will not take them and haulers generally will not either, because a sealed vessel in a crusher is a serious hazard. Contaminated metal is the second category: anything holding fuel, oil, solvent, or unknown chemical residue. Vehicles and vehicle bodies run through a separate process tied to the title and are not part of an ordinary scrap load.
Refrigerant-bearing appliances sit in their own lane. Refrigerators, freezers, window units, and condensers can be recycled, but the refrigerant has to be recovered at a certified facility first. That is not a step to attempt with hand tools. Household batteries and refrigerators are both routinely accepted by removal services, they simply travel to different destinations than the rest of the metal.
Hauling It Yourself or Having It Removed
These are two different transactions and it helps to be clear about which one you are in.
A scrap yard buys metal you deliver, graded and weighed at intake. A removal service is the reverse: you are paying for the labor, the equipment, and the trip, and the crew handles where each material ends up. Neither is the right answer in every case.
Delivering it yourself makes sense when the pile is already sorted, mostly non-ferrous, light enough to load by hand, and you have a truck or trailer and a yard within a sensible drive.
Removal makes sense when weight or access is the real problem. A loaded water heater, a cast iron tub, a full metal shed frame, or a carport flattened by a storm all stop a two-person hand crew, and machine assistance turns a day of struggle into a short job. It also makes sense when the pile is mixed: metal tangled with lumber, drywall, and plastic is not a scrap load at all, and separating it on site is most of the work.
One in-between case worth naming: a structure still standing, like a chain-link run or a carport. Those need dismantling before they are scrap, and the dismantling is the part most people underestimate.
What the Sorting Actually Changes
The sort decides the route, not only the grade. Five separated piles will be accepted almost anywhere, assessed on their own merits, and handled as material. One mixed heap of metal, wood, and plastic is a junk load wherever it goes, and it will be treated like one. That distinction gets settled with a magnet, long before anything is lifted.

Weighing happens at intake on a certified platform scale, and grading happens at the same moment. A mixed load is typically graded to the least valuable metal visible in it, which is the practical reason to arrive pre-sorted: each pile is then weighed and graded on its own merits. Use gauge as the cutoff. Roughly 10 AWG and heavier, the conductor size found in service entrance cable, range cord, and welding leads, carries enough copper per foot to repay the effort, and the ratio falls away quickly below that. Use a purpose-made stripping tool rather than a blade, which slips under pressure. Never burn insulation off: the smoke from PVC jacketing is toxic, and most yards will not accept openly burned wire at all because of the oxide scale and ash residue it leaves on the copper.
Brass is copper and zinc; bronze is copper and tin. Both are handled as red metals but binned separately, since the alloy content changes what a mill can do with them. Bronze shows up in bearings, bushings, pump impellers, marine hardware, and older plumbing valves, and it tends to look browner and duller than brass.

One last piece of practical advice: do not guess an unidentified piece into a pile, and do not let the sorted piles sit outdoors once they are made. Bare steel scales, aluminum dulls and pits, and heavily corroded material gets downgraded or turned away. A heap left through two wet seasons comes back in worse shape than it went out.
